PreS-A lost piglet is looking for her mother. She encounters other barnyard animals who try to make her feel better by suggesting, in turn, that they cuddle, make daisy chains, play chase, roll in the mud, dance in the daffodils, and snooze in the sun. But piglet wants her own mother and cries out with a loud "Oiiiiiink!" Her mother answers her cry and together they have a cuddle, make daisy chains, etc. The text is reassuring and rhythmic, and children may identify with the fright of being lost and the joy of being found. The cheery watercolor cartoons depict farm life on a bright, sunny day, and the gentle pastel color scheme matches the tender tone of the text.-Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Piglet, on a search for her mama, isn't tempted by offers from her farmyard friends to cuddle, play, or snooze--when she wants her mama, no one else will do. After their predictable reunion, Piglet and Mama cuddle, play, and snooze together. The lively watercolor and ink illustrations are charming, but the repetitive text quickly gets tedious. In this pleasing outing, toddlers take a playful tour of the farm with a wandering piglet. When she finds herself alone and adrift in the barnyard, Piglet sets out on a quest to discover her missing mother. From cuddlesome ducks to snoozing cats, nurturing animal mothers of all species offer the porcine orphan surrogate love and games to amuse her until her mother returns. However, not even the prospect of frolicking with donkeys or romping with perky pups can distract Piglet from her mission. Wild's formulaic text works well with a younger audience, who will readily anticipate Piglet's universal response when invited to play with the other families. King's sweetly sentimental, expressive ink-and-watercolor illustrations are simple, yet neatly convey the fondness between the mothers and their offspring and the solitary state of the piglet. The story's underlying message--that it takes a farmyard village to raise a child--will resonate with readers of all ages. Warmly inviting, Wild's tender tale is just right for bedtime snuggles and story time. (Picture book. 2-5) Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

PreS-K. In contrast to Pat Lowery Collins' Come Out, Come Out!0 BKL F 1 05 and all those stories about fuming kids who hide from their caregivers, this gentle farmyard picture book is about that elemental scenario of the lost child who wants to be found. Baby Piglet is searching everywhere for her mama. The other mother animals are kind. Duck wants to hug Piglet, Dog wants Piglet to roll in the mud with the puppies, and so on. But Piglet wants Mama, who, it happens, is looking for her. After they find one another, they embrace. Then they roll in the mud, dance in the daffodils, and snooze in the sun like the other animal families. King's clear illustrations, in soft pinks, greens, and blues, get the messy action and pastoral bliss, and especially the feelings of loss, longing, and coming home. --Hazel Rochman Copyright 2005 Booklist
